Multi Day Sail Charters

Chartwork

For groups and families who want to explore farther a field than is possible on a day trip, we have several overnight tour options available. Because these trips feature shore side accommodations, we can do these trips with group sizes of up to 12 guests.

The trips listed below are only a suggestion. We are happy to plan a trip with you of more than two days duration and to other destinations!

Suggested Trips

Overnight to Toba Inlet

This is a great trip to explore the beauty of both Desolation Sound and one of the majestic inlets carved deep into the BC mainland coast.

Toba Inlet Waterfalls

Toba Inlet Waterfalls

On this two day long trip we will depart from Cortes Island to sail through Desolation Sound and then into Homfray Channel where the mile high Mt Denman towers overhead. These were passages well used by the Coast Salish people and we will be able to stop and see ancient pictographs (drawings on rock) as well as pass by pioneering homestead sites.

Misty Isles In The Waterfall

Misty Isles In The Waterfall

Later in the day we will turn into Toba Inlet, a glacially ground fjord of awesome ruggedness, the snow capped mountains are rooted in the inlet’s green glacial waters of over 1,600 feet (500m) deep. During early summer, waterfalls thunder down from the melting snow pack above and because the cliffs are so sheer, Misty Isles can manoeuvre in close to the waterfalls, a wet and exhilarating experience!

We will spend the night at the mouth of the inlet at Homfray Lodge in their well appointed and comfortable cabins. There is a lovely walk up the hill behind the camp to the base of a waterfall- a great way to stretch the legs before dinner! This waterfall provides the hydro power that lights the cabins.  Dinner will be served in the main lodge as we watch the sunset’s colours play on the mountains of Toba Inlet.

The next day we will make our way back to Cortes via Waddington Channel. Again there is picturesque scenery and historical stops along the way. We may head up Pendrell Sound for a swim. The waters here are the warmest in the Desolation Sound area, often getting into the upper 70’s F (26 C) in high summer. We will finish the day by relaxing on deck, watching for the porpoise and seals that frequent the area as we sail back through Desolation Sound for Cortes Island.

The Discovery Islands Tidal Rapids Trip

The tidal rapids of the Discovery Islands are well known and respected for their beauty and power. On this overnight trip we will voyage forth from Cortes to explore the Yuculta, Hole in the Wall or Surge Narrows rapids.

As the tidal waters make their way in and out of from the inside of Vancouver Island, they Sun Sailare squeezed through the narrow channels that divide the islands resulting in tidal currents of up to 12 to 14 knots. The overfalls and whirlpools produced demand respect and close consultation with the tide tables is the order of the day. But this current also brings the cold, nutrient and oxygen rich seawater in from the open ocean resulting in rich marine growth. It is a beautiful place to explore.

There are several comfortable and friendly options for overnight accommodations in this area. And there are forest walks ranging from easy to moderately strenuous into lakes where we can go for a swim. The choices we make are really driven by the tides of the day. Contact us right away and we will plan out a memorable trip for you and your group! We’d also love to plan longer multi day sail charters for you.

Meals

Our meals feature mostly vegetarian, local and organic fare wherever possible. We produce our own free-range eggs as well as seasonal garden produce. Dinners will often feature BBQ wild salmon line caught by local commercial fishermen or free-range chicken. We can include red-meat on the menu if requested but organic meats are not so easily obtainable on Cortes.
